Fiat G.55 serie 1 Centauro

The Fiat G.55 was the last of the "S" series Italian aircraft consisting of the Fiat, the Macchi C.205 and the Reggiane Re.2005. All of these fighters were equipped with the Daimler Benz DB.605A-1 engine: either the German produced engine or the Alfa Romeo license built version. The G.55 was the best high altitude Italian fighter of WW II with a top speed of 385mph at an altitude of 23,000 feet. After the war, production of the G.55 was resumed with 85 units being built.

The early version came with 1 x 20mm cannon and 4 x 12.7mm machine guns. The series 1 came with 3 x 20mm canons and 2 x 12.7mm machine guns. Both were used primarily as bomber interceptors over Northern Italy in 1943-44. It was a beautifully designed and elegant aircraft attracting attention for its refined lines and great performance.
