Honor our Past:

One of our local regular customer decided to build a diorama of the "Ace in One Day" Alden Rigby, who shot 4 German aircraft on January 1st, 1944. Mr. Rigby is a Utah resident and passed away in 2015. Kitlinx invited his son, Kevin, to visit our store and meet the modeler. Loic asked Kevin to tell us MORE about this fateful event of Jan.1st 1944. He is also an avid modeler and is writing a memory about his father:

Colonel Meyer or the 352nd Fighter Group "blue-nose" at Y-29 Airfield in Belgium, met with Alden at 7am on Jan.1st, and asked him to gather a group of 12 pilots for a mission that day (with a special request of their sobriety after New Year Eve celebrations!). Eight P-47D took off on an earlier bombing mission - but they will jettison their bombs to join the fight. As the group was gathered, they observed anti-aircraft activity on a nearby airfield. As the pilots scrambled to take off, Alden was #4 on the first group, and as he barely pulled up his wheels, a Fw-190 slid between him and his #3. A short burst sent the Fw.190 to the ground. His second kill was much more difficult, against another Fw.190 which he finally downed but with great expense of ammo. As he was returning to the airfield, still not realizing of the extent of the German attack of "Operation Bodenplatte", he saw a P-47 and a Bf.109 on a deadly tight turn (which a Bf.109 would most likely win!). He intervened and shot down the Bf.109. Both Alden and the pilot of the P-47 will become life-long friends. Now convinced he was out of ammo, he was prepared to return to base and saw a P-51 in a fight with a Bf.109, and already making hits on its tail. He only had ammo in two of his .50cal, which blasted into the cockpit of the Bf.109 for his final tally.

During this fight, Alden mentioned observing a beautiful Split S Maneuver at 1,000ft from a German Ace. Pilots of Jagdgeschwader 11 were the German opponents.

On that day, Alden claimed 2 full and 2 shared credits. But after the Air Force reviewed the event and the various pilot reports, they awarded the full 4 kills in 2002, making him an ace since he shot another Bf.109 in Nov.27, 1944. He flew with the Utah National Guards and then transferred to Radar Units during the Korean War still keeping his flying status.

In 2010, GreatModels offered an Artist Proof Painting of Alden's P-51D in flight to his family. In the below picture, Loic is on the left (USAF uniform), Chad Bailey fourth from left (Artist), Alden Rigby is second from right, surrounded by his daughter Jerry and his wife Eleen (the names on the cowling of his P-51D). We are so glad to have captured this memory before their passing.
